A look back at the 1992-1993 Pittsburgh Penguins season. The Penguins set a new NHL record for consecutive victories of 17 that still stands today. The Penguins set a team record for wins (56) and points (119) in a single season. Also, the team won the Presidents’ Trophy as the league’s top team for the first time in club history. Mario Lemieux missed 1/3 of the season, but won the scoring title by 12 points over Pat Lafontaine despite trailing by 18 when returning from undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s disease. The Pens lost in the final Patrick division finals in seven games to the New York Islanders. The series was arguably the biggest upset in modern NHL history. Mario missed the first two games of the series, but the Pens took a 3-2 series lead into New York for game 6, but lost 7-5. Game 7 saw the Pens trailing 3-1 with under 4 minutes left in the 3rd period. The Pens tied the game in the last minutes with 2 goals from the stick of Ronnie Francis. The Pens out shot the Isles 42-17 in game 7, but Glenn Healy had the game of his life. The Islanders would prevail in OT and win the series on David Volek’s one-time slapper that beat Barrasso.
