Specter of Liberalism Haunts Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is being haunted by liberalism and the city is still spending money it does not have. A little couple weeks ago Mayor Luke Ravenstahl (D), the boy wonder, was concerned and fretting because many of his hopes and dreams were pinned to revenues projected from a new casino (being built by Don Barden) on the North Shore. This project had not only fallen behind schedule, but is now in the process of being transferred to new owners and delayed. Seems Mr. Barden did not have all his ducks in a row and did not have enough funding for his grand plans despite a government oversight and selection process that was supposed to pick the best candidate to build this new source of tax revenues for our liberal government. Corruption? Quid pro quo? Your guess at how this man got the sole gaming license for Pittsburgh is as good as any.

This entire hullabaloo however means that future budgets may not be met if this casino does not open on time. Oh! Whatever will

NHL ? History of Los Angeles Kings

The Los Angeles Kings were founded on February 9, 1966 when Jack Kent Cooke was awarded an NHL expansion franchise for Los Angeles.  Prior to the Kings arrival in LA, both the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Hockey League had several team in the California area.  These teams included the Los Angeles Monarchs of the 1930′s and the Los Angeles Blades of the 1960′s.

The NHL decided to expand for the 1967-68 season, Canadian entrepreneur Jack Kent Cooke paid the NHL million dollars to place one of the six expansion teams in LA.  Cooke was awarded this placement along with the other franchise expansion teams which included: the California Seals, Minnesota North Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and the St. Louis Blues.  Cooke named his placement team the Kinds and picked the colors of purple and gold because they were traditional colors of royalty.  The same colors were also adopted by the LA Lakers, which Cooke also

Blue NHL Hockey Jerseys always big in Demand

In this time when every boy wants to be the next Alexander Ovechkin or Sidney Crosby it stands to reason that Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins jerseys are flying off the shelves. However, even though the demand for current NHL sweaters is high, the market for vintage hockey jerseys is just as hot. Whether it is an oldtimer who likes to remember the glory days of the NHL, or a youngster who wants to wear something a little different than his friends hockey sweaters from defunct NHL teams are surprisingly popular.

One team like the Hartford Whalers, who truth be told, was one of the doormats of the league during its relatively brief NHL tenure, probably never sold much of its merchandise outside of its own city while the team was actually still in the league. However, more than a decade after the franchise moved to Carolina to become the Hurricanes, Whalers gear is now hotter than ever. The same can be said of franchises like the Quebec

NHL Betting: Odds to Win the 2011 Stanley Cup

Fresh off their first championship since 1961, the Chicago Blackhawks opened at 5-1 as betting favorites in 2011 Stanley Cup odds. Chicago is not only deep but also young and it stands to figure that they will be a top contender for years to come. Chicago also has exceptional management and coaching and ownership is committed to winning. Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals opened at 13-2 at online sportsbooks. Washington was the President’s Trophy champions in 2010 as the best regular season team and will be a popular choice. Their playoff loss to Montreal in April was one of the true shockers in recent years.

Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are another 13-2 choice in 2011 Stanley Cup odds. Pittsburgh made the Final in both 2008 and 2009, winning the latter. The Penguins must shore up their defense and goaltending, much like the Capitals. The top seed in the Western Conference the past 2 years was the next choice in NHL betting

Preface & Introduction to a hockey book – Hockey’s Most Tragic Deaths

Preface

It was to be a compilation of short stories detailing the lives and tragic deaths of several former NHL hockey players. I was somewhat skeptical about the project at the time, reasoning that a comprehensive range of tragic stories about former pro hockey players had already been compiled in a single book, and that, in any event, such an undertaking would be too extensive and exhaustive for us to realistically complete. My findings from an initial wave of research were that, indeed, several hockey biographies had already been published about players I wished to profile, such as Howie Morenz, Terry Sawchuk, Tim Horton, and John Kordic. There was not, however, a single source which brought together several of these stories. My research also confirmed my initial belief, that the task at hand would be daunting.

The process of establishing the book’s parameters and scope began to emerge once I started my research. It was decided early on that only former NHL

Stanley Cup Finals – Power Plays Give Penguins a Game 3 Victory

The Pittsburgh Penguins finally rallied together on Tuesday. Game 3 of their series against the Detroit Red Wings was a crucial one; in a startling repeat of last year’s Stanley Cup playoffs, the Penguins began this year’s playoffs by losing the first two games of the series. After such a shoddy performance, speculation grew that the Wings would sweep their ill-fated rivals and claim what would be their fifth Stanley Cup since 1997.

But, again shadowing last year’s final series, the Penguins managed to take Game 3, 4-2.

The win came as something of a shock. Not only were the Penguins up against one of the NHL’s strongest teams (the Red Wings have boasted an incredible regular season and an even better postseason), but Pittsburgh was feeble on the ice in the first two periods.

Granted, Penguins center Max Talbot did score the first point, his fifth in the postseason. However, in the nearly 11 minutes that followed, the Penguins were
